Presentation

Fallen in the First World War, the Unknown Soldier has lain beneath the Arc de Triomphe since January 28, 1921. Two years later, a flame was lit for the first time at the tomb, and it became the focus of daily rekindling ceremonies. Discover the story of the Unknown Soldier, his tributes and the reasons why the Arc de Triomphe was chosen as his final resting place.

Practical information

Access to the monument via the pedestrian underpass at the top of avenue des Champs-Elysées and avenue de la Grande Armée. Elevator available for visitors with reduced mobility.
